Chinalco strives to “contribute to local, national and global progress, as well as to the success of our shareholders, through the careful and efficient transformation of natural resources.”

Vision
To be recognized as a first class mining company due to highly efficient and top quality management.

History

In 2007, the Aluminum Corporation of China (CHINALCO) established Mineria Chinalco Peru S.A. (Chinalco Peru) to oversee the construction, development, and operation of the Toromocho copper mega-project. The project stands out as a world-class copper mine globally and represents CHINALCO’s most significant foreign enterprise.

Significant milestones of the project include:

  • 2008: Acquisition of the Toromocho Project announced by Chinalco President, Mr. Xiao Yaqing.
  • 2011: Inauguration of operations at the Kingsmill Tunnel Water Treatment Plant.
  • 2013: Commencement of the main crusher and the SAG mill; official start of mining operations declared by former presidents of Peru and CHINALCO; the stacker’s first operational use.
  • 2014: Start-up of ball mill 2 and dispatch of the first copper concentrate shipment.
  • 2015: Processing plant achieves full designated production capacity.
  • 2016: Titles granted to the homeowners of Nueva Morococha.
  • 2018: Expansion of the Toromocho Mining Unit Plant announced by Peruvian and CHINALCO leadership.
  • 2020: Testing begins for the expanded plant’s SAG ball mill.

Operations
Chinalco manages the Toromocho Mining Unit, which operates an open pit mine that primarily produces copper concentrate. The production process includes several key stages: crushing, grinding, flotation, concentrating, and thickening. The facility is equipped with advanced machinery, including a primary crushing plant, a 5.5-kilometer conveyor belt system, a large ore storage pile, and a comprehensive grinding and flotation circuit. These operations ensure efficient processing and handling of copper concentrate, from extraction to shipment.

On June 1st, Mr. Martin Vizcarra, President of the Republic, alongside Dr. Ge Honglin, President of the Aluminum Corporation of China, announced the commencement of the expansion project at the Toromocho Mining Unit. This significant development aims to boost the unit’s daily production capacity from 117,200 tons to 170,000 tons by 2021, marking a substantial increase in output.

In addition to the expansion, Chinalco Peru has engaged in notable partnerships and projects that contribute to community development and environmental sustainability. Noteworthy is their involvement under Law No. 29230, the “Law on Works for Taxes,”. This law has facilitated the “Improvement and expansion of drinking water services, sewage, and wastewater treatment” project in Yauli district, in collaboration with Compania Minera Chungar S.A.C. and Ferreyros S.A. Moreover, in May 2019, Chinalco Peru expanded its operations by acquiring the prospectus for the Colca and Jalaoca concessions in Apurimac through a public auction.
